Sourcing Guides
Practical guides to briefing, quoting and working with a factory.
These are the working guides: what to send a factory, how to read a quotation, what to ask before placing a first order, and how to compare suppliers on something more useful than price. They are written for the buyer who has a range to place and needs the decisions in front of them rather than a general introduction to the industry.
The consistent advice is to move the ambiguity earlier. A brief with a sketch, a target price band, a quantity and a delivery window produces a quotation you can compare with another. A brief that says “a dress like this one” produces two quotes that are not for the same product, and the comparison is meaningless. The same applies to samples and to specifications: the more of the detail that is settled before the first sample, the fewer rounds it takes to get there.
It is also worth knowing which parts of the process you are paying to have managed. Sourcing fabric, developing a pattern, grading, sampling, inspecting and shipping can be bundled into one factory relationship or split across specialists. Bundling is simpler and usually cheaper at small volume; splitting gives control at larger volume and when a particular capability matters. Neither is wrong, but the choice should be deliberate.
Start from the services overview if you want to see how the stages fit together, products if you already know the category, or work through the guides below in the order you will meet them.
