Outerwear is built around what goes inside it. A coat carries interlining, often padding, always a facing and a lining bag, and every one of those layers adds bulk at the seam. The pattern has to allow for that bulk before the first sample is cut, because a coat that measures correctly in the flat can still pull across the back once the interlining is in.

These are the choices that decide whether the garment works in wear — and they are all made before cutting, not during finishing.
Interlining is a warmth decision before it is a cost decision
Weight and method — sewn-in, fusible or quilted — set both how warm the coat is and how it hangs. Choosing it after the shell is cut is how a coat ends up stiff across the front and soft across the back.
The facing carries the roll of the collar
On a tailored collar the roll comes from the facing and the undercollar rather than from pressing alone. Both are cut on the grain direction that produces the roll, and the collar is set before the lining is closed.
Lining is cut with movement allowance
A coat lining needs more ease than a dress lining because it moves against the interlining. Cut too close it tears at the underarm; cut too loose it bags above the hem. The allowance is set at pattern stage, per silhouette.

Typical questions we ask
- What temperature range does the coat have to work in? That decides the interlining before anything else.
- Should it layer over a knit, or be worn close? Layer allowance changes the whole grade.
- Which details are brand-signature — buttons, belt, storm flap? Those are the ones worth settling on the first sample.
