A corset dress is a pattern-engineering job. Boning channels, the waist stay, the spiral-versus-rigid choice and the closure all have to be settled before the first toile is cut. Adding them to a finished bodice block produces a dress that twists at the waist and gapes along the top edge.

Constructions
What we build in this category
Each of these is developed as its own programme: its own block, its own interlining and its own sample round.
Spiral and rigid boning do different jobs
Spiral boning bends with the body and is used where the wearer has to sit; rigid boning holds a line and restricts. The choice is made per panel, not per garment.
The waist stay carries the load
A corseted dress hangs from the waist, not the shoulders. Without a stay the bodice migrates and the waist seam shifts, which is the commonest fault on corseted styles.
Fitting is done on a body
A corseted bodice approved on a stand will not sit correctly on a breathing wearer. We fit on a body, at least twice.

Development process
From reference to bulk in five steps

Structure brief
We start from how much shaping the corset gives and whether the wearer has to sit, because that decides the boning before anything is cut.

Block and structural layers
The bodice is built from a corsetry block with its own coutil layer, channels and waist stay, not adapted from a dress block.

Toile and body fittings
A toile is fitted on a body at least twice. A corseted bodice cannot be approved on a stand.

Approval and grading on the boned block
Grading is checked against the boned block, since the top edge and the waist behave differently from a straight bodice.

Production and structure inspection
Bonings, channels, stay and closure are inspected as structural operations before the garment is closed.
