What should a fashion tech pack include?

Most tech pack templates are longer than the job requires. The useful question is not how many fields a pack has but which ones change the garment, the cost or the inspection — and those are fewer than most templates suggest.

One principle governs the whole list: a field earns its place if a factory would otherwise have to guess. Fields that restate what the drawing already shows are length; fields that remove a decision are specification.

Six of the seven are non-negotiable on any style. The seventh — packing and labelling — can be settled later than the others, provided it is settled before freight is booked.

1. Cover, version and identity

A pack needs a name, a size it describes, a date and a revision number. It sounds like administration and it is the field that prevents the most common failure of all: two people each holding a correct-looking copy and disagreeing about which one is current.

  • Style name or number, used consistently across the pack, the order and the correspondence.
  • Base size the chart is drafted to, stated explicitly, because a chart for a size S and one for a size M look identical without it.
  • Version date and number, with a note naming the version it replaces.
  • Season or drop where relevant, because it decides the delivery window.

2. Flat drawings

Flats are technical drawings rather than illustrations, and they carry things a photograph cannot: where the seams actually run, how the back closes, whether the neckline is faced or bound. A croquis-style sketch is fine for communicating mood and poor for communicating construction.

  • Front and back, always. A back view is where closures and yoke lines live.
  • Construction callouts — arrows to the seams, darts and details that matter.
  • Separate drawings for any component with its own shape: lining, facing, belt, tie.

3. The measurement chart

This is the section that turns fit into something checkable, and it is the one worth spending the most time on. It should give every point a target and a tolerance, at the base size and across the range.

4. Construction

This is the section most packs under-write and the one that explains the widest price differences between quotes on the same design. Anything invisible from the outside belongs here.

  • Lining — full, half or none, in what, and how it is attached at the hem and the armhole.
  • Interlining and structure — where it goes, what weight, whether the garment has a boned or supported panel.
  • Closure — type, length, position, and what covers it.
  • Seam and edge finish — overlocked, bound, French, and what the hem depth is.
  • Special processes — beading, pleating, embroidery, with the area and density where relevant.

5. Materials

Fabric named as specifically as you can, and behaviour described where you cannot name it. The same trade name covers cloths of different weight, stretch and recovery, and two of them produce visibly different garments from one pattern.

  • Shell fabric — article, weight, and a swatch if you have one.
  • Contrast fabrics — lace, mesh, sequinned panels, each named separately.
  • Lining and interlining — often omitted, and often the difference between a garment that holds its shape and one that does not.
  • Substitution policy — whether the factory may propose an alternative, and what would be acceptable.

6. Trims and hardware

Small items with real lead times. A zip specified only as “gold” becomes a conversation at the point of booking, which is the point at which it starts costing calendar time.

  • Zips by length, teeth type, finish and pull type.
  • Buttons and fastenings by size, colour and material.
  • Thread colour and type, which matters most on a contrast stitch.
  • Boning, tape, elastic, hooks where the construction uses them.

7. Finish, labelling and packing

  • Care and content labelling, with the destination market stated, because the requirement differs by market.
  • Brand label placement, including whether it sits inside or on the outer edge.
  • Pressing and final appearance — anything about the finish that a buyer would notice.
  • Folding and bagging, driven by whether the goods go to a warehouse, a retail floor or a marketplace.
  • Carton specification — dimensions and weight limit, because volumetric weight can be charged instead of actual weight.

Manufacturing perspective: which fields we actually use

Inside a factory, a pack is read in stages, and the sections that get read most carefully are not the ones buyers expect.

  • The pattern maker reads the measurements and the construction together. A chart without construction gives a pattern that measures correctly and behaves wrongly.
  • The costing desk reads construction and trims first. Those two decide the operation count, which is where the labour cost sits.
  • Inspection reads the chart and nothing else. If the tolerance is missing there, the rest of the pack cannot make the inspection meaningful.
  • Packing reads the last section only, which is why an error there survives to the port undetected.

Fields you can safely leave out

Zeros and code fields are different things. The fields below appear in most templates and are genuinely optional on a first style, either because they can be derived from something else or because nobody will inspect against them.

Optional here means optional at the first order, not forever. Most of these become worth having once a style is repeated, and all of them become necessary at the point you scale.

How the pack changes on a repeat

A pack written for a first style and a pack for a repeat are different documents with different jobs. The first exists to create a garment; the second exists to prove the new one matches the old one.

  • The chart gains its history. Values stop being targets and become records of what the approved garment measured, with the tolerance it was inspected against.
  • Construction stops being described and starts being referenced. “As approved, version 3” is a stronger instruction than a re-description, provided that version exists.
  • Materials become a booking list. Article, finish and swatch reference, so the shade is matched rather than chosen.
  • Packing is copied unchanged unless the channel has changed, in which case it is the thing most likely to go wrong unnoticed.

There is a second reason to keep the pack current, and it shows up on the balance sheet. A repeat needs a booking list, a measurement standard and a packing specification; it does not need pattern development, most sampling or construction decisions. A brand that can supply the first three from a dated pack is buying production. One that cannot is buying a re-development and paying development prices for it.

It is worth noting what does not change either. The fabric behaviour, the construction and usually the size range are identical. Everything that made the first order difficult has already been resolved, which is why the same pack that took a fortnight to assemble the first time takes minutes to confirm the second.

The practical implication is that a pack should be organised by reader rather than by designer preference. Grouping the fields each desk needs together costs nothing and reduces the number of times somebody has to ask.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the pack for the outside of the garment. The interior is where interpretation and cost both live.
  • Omitting tolerances. A target without a range can be disputed but not inspected.
  • One size only. A chart that does not cover the range cannot be graded from.
  • Naming a fabric without a weight. The same name covers several cloths.
  • Trims left to the sample. A trim that exists as one piece may not exist as four hundred in the right finish.
  • Packing added at the end. It is a freight cost and a compliance requirement, not an afterthought.
  • No version date. Two correct-looking copies and one disagreement.

Frequently asked questions

Which sections are essential?

Cover and version, flats, the measurement chart with tolerances, construction, and materials. Those five are needed on any style. Trims are essential wherever there is hardware, and finish, labelling and packing are essential before freight is booked but can be settled later than the rest.

How long should a tech pack be?

As short as it can be while removing every decision a factory would otherwise make alone. That is often eight to fifteen pages for a dress, and the number matters far less than whether the fourth reader — typically inspection or cutting — can act on it without asking anyone.

How many points of measure should the chart have?

Every point the fit depends on, and no more. For a fitted dress that is usually a dozen or so: bust, waist, hip, lengths, neckline depth and width, armhole, shoulder and hem. Missing a point means the factory decides it, and adding points nobody will inspect only makes the chart harder to read.

What tolerance should I specify?

Tight enough to protect the fit and loose enough to be achievable in the fabric. A stable woven will hold a tighter range than a fluid or stretch cloth, and the factory can tell you which is realistic for the material — but the number has to exist, because without it every inspection ends in a discussion about how the garment feels.

Should I allow fabric substitution?

Say so explicitly either way. Allowing it with stated boundaries — colour, weight, stretch and recovery all within range — lets a factory solve an availability problem without a delay. Disallowing it is also reasonable, provided you accept that an out-of-stock article becomes a wait rather than a substitution.

Who should write the tech pack?

The brand, because it describes the brand's product. Where a factory develops it on your behalf, agree in writing which parts transfer when the relationship ends — otherwise the specification becomes a reason you cannot move production.

Do I need specialist software?

No. A legible, versioned PDF with numbered sheets is entirely workable. What matters is that the chart can be read, that the drawings show what words describe poorly, and that a revision can be identified at a glance.

Conclusion

A tech pack earns its length only where it removes a decision. Seven sections cover it: identity and version, flats, measurements with tolerances, construction, materials, trims, and finish with packing.

Organise it by the person reading it rather than by preference. Put tolerances on every point, describe the inside of the garment, and date every revision. That is the difference between a document a factory can act on and a document it has to interpret.
