How to create a tech pack for a dress

A dress is the hardest common garment to specify, because a single style can be structured at the bodice and fluid at the skirt — two different construction logics in one piece, joined at a seam that has to do both jobs.

That is why a dress pack needs more construction detail than a top or a skirt, and why the measurement chart has to cover the waist join carefully. Steps one and four are the ones specific to dresses. Everything else follows the general pattern.

Step 1: decide where the structure sits

Almost every dress is a combination of a structured element and a fluid one, and the useful decision is which is which. Taking that decision before drafting prevents the most common dress failure: a bodice drafted as though it were part of a fluid garment, which then collapses under its own weight.

  • Structured bodice, fluid skirt — the classic evening silhouette. The bodice is drafted and supported; the skirt is draped or cut for fall.
  • Fluid throughout — slip dresses, bias cuts, cowls. The whole garment lives in how the cloth hangs, and the measurements carry less of the shape.
  • Structured throughout — sheaths, tailored dresses. The measurements carry the shape and the cloth is chosen for stability.

Where the garment changes character, say so on the flat. That seam is a construction decision, not a decorative one, and it is where the assembly order gets fixed.

Step 2: flats

Front and back, with the seams drawn where they actually run. For a dress, three things are worth annotating explicitly because they are invisible on a finished photograph and decisive in production.

  • The waist seam position, including whether it is a seam at all, or a shaped panel with no visible join.
  • Dart placement, because darts are how a bodice takes shape and their position decides how the garment fits through the bust and waist.
  • Any drape or gathering, marked with where it starts, where it ends, and how much fabric it consumes.

Step 3: the measurement chart

A dress chart needs every point the fit depends on, with a tolerance at each. The points below are the ones most often missing, and each one has a visible consequence.

State how each point is measured. A neckline depth measured flat and one measured along the curve are different numbers, and a chart that does not say which will be measured both ways.

Step 4: construction, split by section

Describe the bodice and the skirt separately, then describe the join. The two halves fail in different ways, and a single combined description loses that.

  • Bodice: lining, interlining, whether it is boned or faced, dart method, and how the neckline is finished.
  • Skirt: lining and its attachment, whether the waist is on a waistband or a facing, how the hem is finished and at what depth.
  • The join: at the waist, how the lining is attached, and whether the seam is pressed open or down. This is the seam that most often causes trouble, because one side of it is usually under tension and the other is not.

If the dress has a slit, a vent or an asymmetric hem, those belong here too, with the length and position stated. They change the lining pattern and the assembly order.

Step 5: fabric, including the parts that differ

Dresses frequently use more than one cloth, and each has to be named. The common ones are the shell, the lining, and any contrast or overlay.

  • Shell: article or behaviour. On a dress this decides almost everything about how the garment moves.
  • Lining: often omitted from early briefs and often the difference between a skirt that hangs and one that clings.
  • Contrast, overlay or trim fabric: lace, mesh, sequinned panels, each with its own weight and its own behaviour on the stand.
  • Interfacing: weight and area, wherever the garment has to hold a line.

Steps 6 and 7: trims, finish, labelling and packing

  • Closure: invisible zip, exposed zip, buttons, or a combination, with the length and the position, and what covers it.
  • Thread colour and type, which matters most on a visible or contrast stitch.
  • Care and content labelling for the destination market, and where the brand label sits.
  • Folding and bagging, and the carton specification, decided before freight rather than at it.

Manufacturing perspective: where dress development actually goes wrong

Three failures account for most of the extra sample rounds we see on dresses. None of them is about skill on the line.

  • A fluid bodice specified as though it were structured. The pattern assumes the cloth will hold a shape it cannot, and the first sample collapses through the bust.
  • A waist join described as decoration rather than construction. If the bodice is structured and the skirt is not, the join carries the transition and has to be specified as such.
  • The lining left to the sample. Lining changes how a skirt falls and how a bodice sits, so deciding it after fitting means re-fitting.
What saves the most sample rounds: stating the fabric before the first pattern is cut. On a dress the cloth is a structural element rather than a surface, and a pattern drafted for the wrong cloth has to be redrafted rather than adjusted.

Common mistakes

  • One measurement chart covering the whole dress without saying how lengths are measured. Length disputes are the most common unresolvable difference on a dress.
  • Describing the bodice and skirt together. They fail differently and need separate specification.
  • Omitting the lining. It changes drape, opacity and how the garment sits.
  • Leaving the fabric until after sampling. On a dress this is the most expensive single omission available.
  • Not stating hem sweep. It decides movement, fabric consumption and how the skirt photographs.
  • Treating the zip as a detail. Length must match the opening it serves.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a dress need more detail than a top or a skirt?

Because most dresses combine two construction logics in one garment. A structured bodice and a fluid skirt behave differently, are drafted differently and fail differently, and the join between them carries the transition. A top or a skirt usually has one logic throughout.

How many points of measure should a dress chart have?

Usually a dozen or more: bust, waist and waist position, hip, bodice length, neckline depth and width, shoulder, armhole, skirt length, hem sweep, and the zip length. The test is not the number but whether each point is one the fit actually depends on, and whether the method of measuring it is stated.

How do I describe a drape or a cowl?

Describe where it starts and ends, how deep it should fall, and roughly how much fabric it consumes. Better still, supply a reference garment or a photograph plus the intended change. Drape is the one element that genuinely benefits from work on a stand, which is why the fabric decision comes before the pattern on a draped style.

Do I need to specify the lining?

Yes, and it is one of the most commonly omitted fields. Lining affects opacity, how the skirt falls, and how the bodice sits against the body. Leaving it unspecified means the factory decides, and the decision will be made on availability rather than on how the garment should behave.

How should I state length?

From a named point — centre back neck, or natural waist, or high point of shoulder — and consistently. “Midi” is not a measurement. Length disputes are the most common unresolvable difference on a dress, and they are entirely preventable by stating the origin point.

Does a structured bodice need special specification?

It needs the support elements stated: whether it is boned, what interlining and where, whether there is an internal support panel, and how the neckline edge is finished. These are invisible in the finished garment, decisive in how it holds, and they change the operation count and therefore the price.

Conclusion

A dress pack is different from other packs in two places: you decide where the structure sits before anything is drafted, and you specify the bodice, the skirt and the join between them separately because they fail in different ways.

State the fabric before the pattern, put a tolerance on every point, say how each length is measured, and settle the lining. Those four habits prevent the sample rounds that otherwise make dress development feel slower than it is.
