Two dresses can look the same on a hanger and behave completely differently after a season of wear, and the difference is almost never visible. It sits below the surface: in how the neckline is stayed, whether the seam allowances are finished, whether the waist is interfaced, and whether the hem was levelled on a body or on a table.
Construction is the part of a garment that determines three things at once — how it fits, what it costs, and whether the same standard can be repeated in season two. Those three are connected, and a decision taken for one of them always shows up in the other two.

Construction decides how a garment holds its shape, how long it keeps it, and how repeatable it is. Structure inside the garment — interfacing, stay tape, boning, canvas — controls fit and durability but is invisible to the customer. Seam and edge finishing controls how the garment behaves in wear and in washing. The two are usually traded against each other when a price has to come down, and that trade is where quality quietly leaves a product.

Read the table as a cost list rather than a quality list. Every row on the left is something that has to be paid for, and every row on the right is what happens when it is not — usually one season later, in a customer's wardrobe rather than in your warehouse.
Construction is four decisions, not one
Buyers often talk about construction as if it were a single setting — simple or complex. In practice four separate decisions get made on every style, and they are usually made at four different moments, which is why they end up inconsistent.
Structure: what holds the shape
Interfacing, canvas, boning and stay tape are the internal elements that make a garment keep a form rather than follow one. A structured bodice is not simply a bodice sewn differently; it is a different assembly built on a different pattern with different internal layers.
Seams: how the panels join
Seam type is chosen for strength, for how the inside will look, and for whether the fabric frays. A French seam on a sheer cloth is not a luxury, it is the only finish that does not leave a visible raw edge. A flat-felled seam on a bulky cloth may be impossible altogether.
Edges: how the garment is finished
Facings, bindings and linings are three ways to finish the same armhole, with different costs and different behaviour. Facings are the cheapest and the least stable. Binding is cleaner to the eye and slower to sew. A lining removes the problem by covering it, at the cost of additional material and additional assembly.
Closures: how it opens and closes
Zip type and position, hook and eye placement, and how the closure is concealed all affect both fit and the amount of hand work at the end of the line. An invisible zip is not simply a zip; it is a specific insertion method that has to be specified.
How construction reaches the fit
Fit problems are usually diagnosed as pattern problems, and sometimes they are. Just as often they are construction problems that present as fit symptoms, and correcting them on the pattern makes the fit worse somewhere else.
A neckline that grows
A neckline that feels right at the fitting and slips by the end of an evening is usually a stay problem rather than a pattern problem. The opening has stretched because nothing was holding it, and tightening the pattern simply cuts a smaller hole that still stretches.
A waist that collapses
A fitted waist that stops holding its line usually lacks interfacing or the right one. The pattern is correct on the table and the garment is correct on the first wear; what changes is that the fabric has been asked to do a job that a stable element should be doing.
A hem that hangs unevenly
An uneven hem is frequently a levelling problem rather than a cutting problem. A dress with weight or drape has to be levelled on the body or on a form, because the cloth continues to settle after it is cut. Levelling it flat on a table produces a straight edge on a curved situation.
From the sample room: where construction decisions really get made
Construction is designed in the sketch and decided in the sample room, and the two rarely agree. What the sketch shows is a silhouette. What the sample room has to solve is how a specific cloth in a specific shape will hold that silhouette on a moving body for a full day's wear.
Three things happen at that point. The pattern maker adds internal elements the sketch did not anticipate, because the cloth cannot do the job alone. The sample maker makes a judgement call about seam finish based on how the cloth behaves at the machine. And somebody decides how much to conceal — how much structure can be hidden before the garment stops looking like the sketch.
Those judgements are the difference between a supplier and a manufacturer. A supplier will build exactly what was drawn and hand over a garment that collapses. A manufacturer will tell you the waistband needs interfacing before the sample is made, and explain what it costs, so the decision is yours rather than a surprise.
Practical example: one bodice, three levels of structure
Take a single fitted bodice with a shaped neckline. The sketch is fixed. The table shows what happens as structure is added, and what each level buys and costs.

None of the three is the right answer on its own. An unstructured bodice is entirely correct for a summer dress on a soft cloth. It is the wrong answer for a strapless evening gown, and the wrongness will not show until the garment is worn — which is exactly why the structure level belongs in the brief rather than in the sample room's discretion.
Common construction mistakes
- Specifying the outside and not the inside. The sketch describes the visible garment. The brief has to describe what is holding it.
- Letting the sample room decide the structure level silently. If it is not in the brief, it will be resolved by whoever is building the sample, and it may be resolved differently next season.
- Cutting cost from structure rather than from the visible. Removing interfacing saves very little and costs the garment its shape.
- Assuming a sample proves the construction. A sample proves the construction works once, on a form, for five minutes.
- Changing the fabric after the construction is agreed. Structure is chosen for a cloth's behaviour; change the cloth and the structure is no longer valid.
- Treating the inside as invisible. Customers open garments, resellers photograph them, and returns are increasingly driven by what the inside looks like.
What construction does to cost and minimum
Construction moves unit cost through the number of operations rather than through material, which is the opposite of fabric. That distinction matters because it changes which order sizes benefit from which simplification. The table is left without figures on purpose — the direction is reliable, the numbers are not, until a specification is fixed.

The pattern across the table is that construction cost is mostly labour and operations, so it scales with the number of pieces rather than being spread across them. A structurally complex garment does not get cheaper because you order fewer; it gets expensive faster.

- The silhouette, with the support point stated — shoulder, waist or internal structure
- Which surfaces will be seen from the inside, and by whom
- The wear the garment has to survive, and whether it will be washed or cleaned
- The structure level you expect, described in terms of behaviour rather than materials
- Any construction the market expects at your price point
- The closures you want, and whether they have to be concealed
Listing the structure level explicitly is the single highest-value item on that list. It is the decision most often left to chance and the one most expensive to change after the pattern is set.

Frequently asked questions
What does garment construction mean?
Everything about how the garment is put together once the pattern exists: the internal structure that holds its shape, how the panels are seamed, how the edges are finished, and how it opens and closes. It is separate from the pattern, though the two constrain each other, and it is the main thing a customer feels without seeing.
Can construction fix a fit problem?
Sometimes, and it is worth checking before redrafting a pattern. A neckline that stretches, a waist that collapses and a hem that hangs unevenly are frequently construction symptoms rather than pattern errors. Correcting them on the pattern alone often moves the problem rather than removing it.
Why does interfacing matter if nobody sees it?

Will a repeat order be built to the same construction?
