Production Lead Time

A delivery date is not a single duration, it is a sequence, and every stage in it has a dependency. Development and sampling has to finish before fabric can be booked. Fabric has to arrive and be approved before cutting can start. Cutting has to finish before the line can be loaded. Finishing, inspection and packing have to complete before the goods can be handed to a forwarder. Along that chain, the time that is actually consumed is often less than the time spent waiting for someone to approve something.

Three things move a date more than anything else in practice. The first is whether the fabric is a stock article or has to be woven or dyed to order, which adds weeks rather than days if the shade is bespoke. The second is how many sample rounds the fit needs — a range that approves in one round and a range that needs three are on very different calendars. The third is when in the year you place the order: capacity in the run-up to the main buying season is not the same as capacity in the quiet months.

Because of that, lead time here is quoted for your route rather than published as a house number. Sampling is typically shorter than bulk, bulk is shorter outside peak, and the figure that matters is the one confirmed against your style, quantity and the month you are ordering. A useful discipline is to work backwards from your in-store date and identify which single dependency has the least slack — that is the date you are really managing.
