Most of these cost nothing to decide and are expensive to correct. That asymmetry is the entire argument for specifying packing at the point of cost, not at the point of shipping.
Volumetric weight: the cost hiding in the carton
Freight is often charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, where volumetric weight is derived from the carton's dimensions. A carton that is larger than the goods require is therefore not a neutral choice — it is a permanent surcharge on every shipment of that style.
- Dresses are light and bulky, which makes volume the binding constraint more often than weight. This is the opposite of the intuition most people bring from shipping heavier goods.
- Folding more tightly reduces volume and increases creasing, so there is a genuine trade-off rather than a free win.
- Carton fill matters — a partly filled carton costs the same to ship as a full one and holds less.
- Compression is not free — a garment compressed for weeks may not recover well, particularly in a fabric with poor recovery.
The practical approach is to fix the fold method and the carton dimensions together, and to choose a carton that the folded garment fills properly. Left to a default, the carton is chosen from what is available rather than from what the goods need.
Protecting the garment
The garment has to arrive in saleable condition, and the failure modes are predictable.
- Creasing. A fold that is acceptable for an hour is not acceptable for six weeks in a container. Fold lines should follow the garment's own structure rather than crossing the front panel.
- Surface marking. Satin, sequinned and coated cloths mark where they are pressed against each other or against a bag. Interleaving or individual bagging prevents it.
- Beading and embellishment damage. Sequins and hand work can catch on adjacent garments, lifting threads. This is where individual bagging is not optional.
- Moisture. Long sea transit in humid conditions is a real risk for cellulosic fibres, and it is worth asking what the desiccant approach is.
- Hardware pressing against cloth. A zip pull or a hook pressed against a garment through weeks of transit and vibration will leave a mark.
The cheapest protection is bagging, and the reason it is sometimes skipped is that it adds handling time rather than material cost. On embellished or satin garments the handling time is worth more than the risk it removes.
Destination and channel change the specification
The same garment shipped to a warehouse, a retail floor and a marketplace fulfilment centre has three different packing specifications, and the differences are compliance requirements rather than preferences.

Alongside the channel sits the destination market's labelling requirement — fibre content, care symbols and origin marking differ between markets, and the requirement is a legal one rather than a stylistic choice. It cannot be inferred from the design, so it has to be stated.
Manufacturing perspective: why packing gets compressed
Packing is the stage most often squeezed when a schedule is tight, and it is squeezed for a reason that looks rational from inside the building: it is the last operation, everything before it is already late, and packing time looks like the slack.
- The consequence is that packing becomes a default. The fold, the bag and the carton are chosen from what is on hand rather than from a specification.
- The cost appears somewhere else. In freight, in re-labelling, in goods re-pressed on arrival, or in a marketplace rejection — never in the packing line.
- It is invisible until arrival. Unlike a measurement fault, a packing fault cannot be found by inspection in the factory, because the damage happens afterwards.
- The fix is upstream. Deciding the packing specification at the point of order costs nothing; recovering from a wrong one costs a shipment.
This is why a packing specification belongs in the tech pack rather than in a shipping email. It is the same decision either way, and one of those moments is before the cartons are bought.
Case packs and size ratios
If you are shipping to a wholesale customer or a distributor, the case pack — how many units of each size sit in a carton — is often specified by the buyer rather than by you. Getting it wrong means the goods have to be re-packed at the far end, at somebody's cost.
State the ratio before packing and make it match the size curve you expect to sell. A case pack weighted towards a size nobody buys is stock that sits, and re-weighting it later means breaking cases, which is slower and more expensive than packing them correctly the first time.

Neither batch was more expensive to produce. Batch B spent an hour deciding and a little more handling time, and removed a set of costs that would otherwise have been paid at the far end.
Common mistakes
- Specifying packing after the goods are made. The decision is the same either way; only the cost changes.
- Choosing a carton by availability. It is a permanent freight surcharge, not a neutral default.
- Not stating the destination market. Labelling requirements are legal requirements and they differ.
- Assuming a marketplace will accept standard bagging. Requirements are specific and rejection is expensive.
- Skipping individual bagging on embellished goods. Embellishment catching on adjacent garments is a visible defect.
- Not asking about moisture protection on long sea transit. It is a real risk and a cheap question.

When should I specify packing?
With the rest of the specification, before the order. It costs nothing to decide at that point and it is the stage most likely to be compressed later, at which point the specification is replaced by whatever is available. The only hard deadline is that it must be settled before freight is booked.
Should dresses ship hanging or flat?
Hanging reduces creasing and increases volume substantially, which raises freight. Flat costs less to ship and risks creasing that has to be removed before sale. The answer usually depends on how the goods will be sold: a garment going straight to a retail rail may justify the volume, one going to a warehouse generally does not.
What is volumetric weight and why does it matter?
It is a weight calculated from the carton's dimensions, used by carriers because a light bulky consignment occupies space that could carry something heavier. Freight is frequently charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, so an oversized carton is a permanent cost on every shipment of that style rather than a one-off.

Can I approve the packing before the bulk order?
You can and it is worth doing on a new style or a new channel. Asking for a packed sample — the garment folded and bagged as it will ship — settles the fold, the bag size and the carton fill before several hundred units are packed the wrong way.
